More Than a Film—A Message of Values, Dignity, Women’s Strength, and Humanity

| From Maharishi Valmiki's words to the world's hearts — the timeless message of the Ramayana. |
In an age when the world is advancing rapidly through artificial intelligence (AI), science, and modern technology, India continues to draw attention to the timeless values of its spiritual heritage. In this context, the upcoming cinematic adaptation of the Ramayana presents an important opportunity for cultural dialogue with the world.
Technology gives us the means to progress, but our values help us decide how that progress should be used. Finding a balance between modern advancement and spiritual wisdom has become increasingly important.
Ramayana: More Than a Story
The Ramayana is one of India’s most treasured cultural epics. For generations, it has inspired people to reflect on truth, duty, sacrifice, compassion, and righteous conduct. Lord Rama represents dignity, responsibility, and adherence to principles, while Goddess Sita represents self-respect, determination, moral courage, and inner strength.
Therefore, when a major film based on the Ramayana reaches audiences around the world, our attention should not be limited to its visuals, music, costumes, or performances. How does Ranbir Kapoor portray Lord Rama? How does Sai Pallavi appear as Goddess Sita? How magnificent is the film? These questions have their place, but a more important question deserves our attention:
What does this film seek to teach us?
What values will it introduce to the younger generation? Will its story encourage us to reflect on our own lives and behaviour? In my view, the deeper significance of such a film lies not only in its cinematic presentation but also in the message it communicates.
Lord Rama: An Ideal of Dignity and Responsibility
In Indian tradition, Lord Rama is revered as Maryada Purushottam—the ideal person who upholds dignity, righteousness, and moral responsibility. His example reminds us that greatness is not measured only by power or success. It is also reflected in how we fulfil our responsibilities and conduct ourselves, particularly in difficult circumstances.
Today, success is often measured through wealth, status, and popularity. But without honesty, compassion, and responsibility, can these achievements truly guide society in the right direction? The Ramayana encourages us to reflect on such questions.
Integrity, respect for our duties, and sensitivity towards others are values that every society needs. In this sense, the ideals represented by Lord Rama can inspire not only India but humanity as a whole.
Goddess Sita: The Strength of Self-Respect
Goddess Sita’s character should not be understood only through the ideas of sacrifice and patience. Such a limited interpretation overlooks the depth of her personality. She represents self-respect, conviction, moral courage, and inner strength. Her character encourages us to recognise the importance of preserving our dignity and values, even in difficult circumstances.
Devotion does not mean losing oneself, and patience does not mean compromising one’s self-respect.
In today’s consumer-driven world, people can sometimes become so influenced by popularity, appearances, and the desire for external approval that they begin to compromise their own values. This is not merely a challenge for women; it concerns society as a whole. Sita’s character reminds us that a person’s worth is not determined by clothing, jewellery, or physical beauty. Character, judgement, and self-respect matter just as much.
When watching Goddess Sita on screen, we should therefore look beyond her appearance and costumes. We should also seek to understand the strength of her character and the values she represents. A woman’s true strength is reflected not only in her appearance but also in her self-respect, convictions, and courage to stand by her values.
When Indian Culture Reaches the World
The international presentation of the Ramayana offers an opportunity to introduce Indian culture to a wider audience. In India, the epic has been passed down through generations in different languages, art forms, and traditions. For many international viewers, a major cinematic adaptation may provide their first encounter with this story.
Through its characters, audiences may also discover aspects of Indian civilisation that explore duty, justice, relationships, sacrifice, and ethical choices. For younger audiences in particular, the film could become a gateway to understanding India’s cultural heritage.
However, this opportunity also brings responsibility. We should present our heritage not merely through spectacular visuals and entertainment, but also through a thoughtful understanding of the values and ideas it contains.
Celebrating Our Heritage Means Living Its Values
There is an important question we must ask ourselves. If we speak of Lord Rama’s dignity, do we make an effort to practise it in our own lives? If we honour Goddess Sita’s self-respect, do we respect the dignity and rights of women in our society?
Praising an ideal is easy. Making a sincere effort to live by it is far more meaningful. The true strength of a culture does not exist only in its ancient texts, temples, or traditions. It also lies in the values that its people preserve through their everyday actions.
The most beautiful introduction to a culture is not what we tell the world about it, but what the world witnesses through our conduct.
If we present the ideals of the Ramayana to the world, we must also make room for truth, justice, compassion, and responsibility in our own lives. That is what it means to honour our heritage sincerely.
Beyond the Film: The Importance of Words and Meaning
Cinema is a powerful medium. Its images, music, dialogues, and performances can leave a lasting impression on audiences. Yet the deeper significance of a creative work also lies in its story and message.
We often discuss what an actor wore, who looked more beautiful, or how grand a film appears. Such discussions are a natural part of cinema, but a film based on an epic as significant as the Ramayana deserves a broader conversation. We should consider what its dialogues mean, what its characters’ decisions teach us, and what ideas remain with us after the story ends.
Words do more than express ideas; they give birth to them. And ideas help shape the direction of society. Therefore, while enjoying a film’s music and visual beauty, we should also pay attention to the message it communicates.
As a writer, I believe supporting a cultural work does not mean accepting it without question. We should approach it with an open mind, recognise its meaningful contributions, and offer thoughtful criticism where necessary. Whether we praise or criticise, our judgement should be guided by understanding, sensitivity, and fairness.
My Hope: May the Message of the Ramayana Reach All Humanity
I hope Ramayana: Part 1 becomes a beautiful and compelling cinematic experience. I hope audiences in India and across the world watch it, explore its characters, and reflect on the human values embedded in its story. My greatest wish is that Lord Rama’s ideals remind us of dignity and responsibility, while Goddess Sita’s character inspires us to value self-respect, determination, and inner strength.
The Ramayana is a cultural legacy whose significance can extend beyond geographical boundaries. Its story offers an opportunity to reflect on our duties, relationships, struggles, and moral choices. Humanity does not speak with one voice or in one language. Yet the importance of truth, compassion, justice, and self-respect can be understood across cultures.
My hope is that science continues to advance, technology continues to evolve, and younger generations continue to dream of new possibilities—without losing their sense of humanity or their connection to meaningful values.
My heartfelt wishes to all my readers. Let us not merely bow to the ideals of Lord Rama and Goddess Sita with reverence; let us also make a sincere effort to bring their values into our own lives.
Mere Ram Padharo—may you return to the courtyard of humanity, lighting the lamps of values and spreading the light of dignity, truth, and compassion once again.
May the message of the Ramayana cross borders and awaken harmony, peace, and humanity in every heart. May the world continue to progress—with science, with technology, and with enduring values.
Mere Ram Padharo… May the light of truth, peace, and compassion remain forever alive in the heart of humanity.
